Ilse Crawford and Studioilse, in collaboration with Artek, Helsinki City Museum, the Alvar Aalto Foundation, and Made by Choice & ProtosDemos undertook the redesign and renovation of the iconic Savoy restaurant.
Originally envisioned by architects Aino and Alvar Aalto, the Savoy interior boasted their signature human-centered approach and functional aesthetics, evident in every aspect of its design. When it first opened its doors in June 1937, the interior showcased a lavish display of various wood species, vibrant textiles, and lush greenery, with the dining hall exuding a captivating atmosphere, complemented by surrounding terraces.
Throughout its over eighty years of operation, subsequent alterations and refurbishments gradually deviated from the original Aalto design. The recent renovation aimed to return the interior closer to its original charm and beauty, while also infusing it with a contemporary touch, aligning it with modern standards.
